How is discrimination shown in Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry!
In my essay I am going to investigate the theme of discrimination in the book Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry. This book was written by a woman called Mildred D. Taylor. She was born in Mississipi but was brought up in Ohio. The book was written in in 1976.The events In the book were set a few years before, during the Great Depression in the USA. Although slavery was gone there were still some discrimination in time to time. In the book Roll of Thunder hear my Cry I will show 4 different ways discrimination is used against black people.
The first example when discrimination is shown, is when cassie is verbly abused by Mr Barnet at his store when he said agresively “Well you just get your little black self back over there and wait some more! “. He abused her by telling her to wait some more while he attended other white people’s who were last In the que. This is discriminative because all people should be treated and attended fairly,no matter what skin colour or race they are.
Another example of discrimination, is when schools were segragated(separated) in the book the Jefferson Davis School(a white school)had more civil rights and even had a school bus of their own. On the other hand the Great Faith school (a black school)had no rights and didn’t have a School bus to go to School. Also they were in a different location from the Jefferson Davis school. This is discriminative because every child should have the same Schools and rights no matter what skin color they are.
Discrimination in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, is also shown when cassie,T.J and little man, were splashed by the murky and dirty waters of the road by the Jefferson Davis School Bus ,every day in the morning On way to School .This involves discrimination because black schools didn’t have school buses so they had to walk to School. On the other hand, white schools had school buses. This also includes discrimination because black people should be able to walk on the streets without fear, especially when they didn’t have buses to go on.
Another example of discrimination, is when T.J. Was also verbly abused by Mr Barnet’s wife at her store when she said “You little nigga, you done killed Jim lee, you done killed him”. This shouldn’t be allowed because she is being racist and is discriminating T.J.This is also bad because R.W and Melvin were with T.J but they were using masks so Mr Barnet and Mrs Barnet thought they were black but they were white.
The next example of discrimination is when every white person was allowed to say the word nigger to black people. This is bad and shouldn’t be allowed because this particular word is racist and is a very discriminative word to black people and to there race.
I think that racism and discrimination is a very bad thing because every one should be treated and respected the same, no matter what skin colour or race you are you’re still a human being. I also think that schools shouldn’t be segragated because children need to have different people from different races and different skin color, because children need to learn about the different countries and how their life is and their traditions and culture.
